This exhibition presented the extraordinary depth and breadth of Italian art at the time of its greatest splendor through masterpieces held in leading public and private collections of the greatest masters of the Renaissance. When Christopher Columbus first set foot on America, Italy was not a unified country like France, Britain and Spain, but was divided into a number of small states whose capitals were the major cities (Milan, Venice, Florence and Rome), and many rich and cultivated small ducal courts.
